Research Notes

Joseph GOODALE (1735-1829)

Joseph GOODALE b. 18 Jun 1735 @ Danvers,Essex Co.,Massachusetts marr. 2 Oct 1754 to Ann(e) Hopkins. Sources INCORRECTLY attribute certain children to him and confuse the name of his wife. CORRECT children are: Joseph (1761), Rest (1763), Zina (1765), Divine (1769), Ann (1777?).

These "extra" children are from the family of a different Joseph Goodale who died in Mass. 1760 (poss. at Grafton in French and Indian War) and was married to a Susanna. (This is also where confusion about wife's name comes in.) See Middlesex Co. Probate, Case 9308 (will), Case 9309 (Guardianship), 1761 Index to Middlesex Co. Probate pg. 196; Probate papers cases 6299-9385; FHL Film 397,074; which proves the existence of a separate family. [I will transcribe or abstract some of this when time allows.] This Joseph (-1760) and Susanna had three children born at Marlboro, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts (per town records): Susanna b. 12 Aug 1755, Joseph b. 22 Aug 1757 and Martha b. 24 Oct 1760.

I have not been able to find the parents of Ann(e) Hopkins, or even a good lead about them.
