Brunswick Co. VA: John Ingram who married Charity Beaumont Waite

I have done quite a bit of research on the Ingram line in Virginia due to connection of an Ingram line of Middlesex, Virginia (John and Samuel) and Richard Waite who married Charity (Beaumont) also in Middlesex County, Va.

There seem to be several lines of Ingram family in Virginia during the same time frame with lots of similar names and even living in the same areas, so it has been very confusing. But I do believe that I have done enough research to show that John Ingram who died with a will in Brunswick County, Va in 1673 is NOT the same line as John Ingram of Northumberland County, Va.

I list below a time line and my thinking on this. I appreciate anyone who has any input, questions, or sees any major flaws with my thinking or would like information on my sources.

1682--JOHN, SON OF SAMUEL & SARAH INGRAM BAPTIZED, MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VA

1712--JOHN INGRAM MARRIED TO MARY CROONY, MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VA

1717--JOHN INGRAM MARRIES CHARITY (BEAUMONT) (WAITE), MIDDLESEX COUNTY

1718--SAMUEL INGRAM BORN, SON OF JOHN INGRAM AND CHARITY, MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VA

1718--CHARITY INGRAM DIES, MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VA

1734--JOHN INGRAM SENIOR, WIFE HANNAH, SON JOHN INGRAM JUNIOR. LEASE LAND FROM ALEXANDER SPOTSWOOD IN SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA

1740--JOHN INGRAM AND SAMUEL INGRAM, HIS SON, SELL LAND THEY OWN IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VA TO JOHN MORGAN. JOHN INGRAM AND SAMUEL INGRAM ARE LIVING IN ORANGE COUNTY VIRGINIA WHEN THEY MAKE THIS SALE.

(*NOTE--SAMUEL INGRAM, SON OF CHARITY, SEEMS TO HEAD OUT ON HIS OWN AT THIS TIME--FIRST TO HAMPSHIRE, WV AND THEN FINALLY SETTLING IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA. HE IS MENTIONED BRIEFLY IN HIS FATHER'S WILL BUT EITHER THEY WERE ON BAD TERMS OR JOHN SR. SEEMS TO FEEL SAMUEL HAS RECEIVED ENOUGH IN PAST YEARS. SAMUEL MARRIED ANN ?)

(MORE ON SAMUEL IN ANOTHER POST.)

1750--JOHN INGRAM SENIOR BUYS LAND LOCATED IN GRANVILLE, NC FROM JOHN ZACHERY, SR. (JOHN WILL LATER BEQUEATH THIS LAND TO HIS SON JESSE IN HIS WILL OF 1762.)

1752--JOHN'S DAUGHTER, ELIZABETH INGRAM MARRIES REUBEN VAUGHAN (LUNENBURG COUNTY, VA--SO THAT MEANS ELIZABETH WAS BORN CIRCA 1732.
(PER "REUBEN VAUGHN KIDD, SOLDIER OF THE CONFEDERACY", COPYRIGHT 1947, ALICE V.D. PIERREPONT)
JOHN INGRAM BEQUEATHS PERSONAL ESTATE TO HIS DAUGHTER, "ELIZABETH VAUGHAN" IN HIS WILL OF 1762.
ALSO IN THIS BOOK IT STATES THAT ELIZABETH WAS THE "DAUGHTER OF JOHN INGRAM AND HANNAH PINES INGRAM."

1754--JOHN INGRAM SENIOR BUYS LAND FROM DANIEL TAYLOR IN BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VA. JOHN LATER BEQUEATHS THIS LAND TO HIS SON GEORGE IN HIS WILL.

1760--JOHN INGRAM JUNIOR DIES WITH WILL, BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VA.
HIS SON BENJAMIN IS OLD ENOUGH TO BE EXECUTOR SO BENJAMIN'S BIRTH DATE WOULD BE ABOUT 1739 AND JOHN'S BIRTH DATE WOULD BE 1719 OR BEFORE.
(*THIS IS NOT PROVEN BUT IT IS BELIEVED THAT THIS JOHN IS PROBABLY SON OF MARY CROONY WHO MARRIED JOHN INGRAM IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY IN 1712. HE CAN'T BE THE SON OF HANNAH PINES BECAUSE HE IS ENTERING INTO LAND DEAL IN 1734 WITH HIS FATHER. IN ORDER TO L EGALLY DO THIS HE WOULD HAVE TO BE 21 YEARS OF AGE AT THAT TIME WHICH WOULD MAKE BIRTH DATE ABOUT 1713--BEFORE MARRIAGE OF JOHN AND CHAIRTY OR THE MARRIAGE TO HANNAH PINES. SO HE IS ONLY A HALF BROTHER TO THE YOUNGER CHILDREN WHO HAVE BIRTH DATES IN THE 1 730 AND 1740'S. HE ALSO HAD ANOTHER HALF BROTHER, SAMUEL WHO WAS THE SON OF CHARITY BEAUMONT)

1763--JOHN INGRAM, SR DIES IN BRUNSWICK COUNTY,VA. HE MENTIONS HIS WIFE HANNAH. HE MENTIONS SONS:
SAMUEL, JOHN (DECEASED), JAMES, GEORGE, JESSE, JOSHUA, RICHARD, BENJAMIN, AND JOSEPH. HE MENTIONS DAUGHTER: ELIZABETH VAUGHAN AND TABITHA GEE.

1770--JAMES INGRAM DIES IN BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VA AND MENTIONS HIS WIFE ELIZABETH. IN ADDITION HE MENTIONS HIS BROTHERS: GEORGE, JOSHUA, RICHARD, BENJAMIN AND JOSEPH. HE ALSO MENTIONS HIS SISTER: TABITHA GEE.

1778--GIDION (SIC) MOON OF LUNENBURG DEEDS NEGROES TO HIS GRANDCHILDREN, NANCY INGRAM, JOSHUA INGRAM, AND MARY INGRAM OF LUNENBURG THAT "ARE NOW IN THE POSSESSION OF RICHARD INGRAM, THEIR FATHER"

1789--NANCY INGRAM, DAUGHTER OF RICHARD INGRAM, MARRIED JESSE MARSHALL ON JULY 9, 1789. THIS WOULD MEAN THAT NANCY'S BIRTH DATE WOULD BE ABOUT 1769,AND THE BIRTH DATE FOR HER FATHER, RICHARD, WOULD BE ABOUT 1749.
THIS TIME FRAME IS PROVED PER THE PENSION TESTIMONY FOR NANCY (INGRAM) MARSHALL WHEN SHE APPLIES AS JESSE MARSHALL'S WIDOW AND LISTS HER BIRTH DATE AS 1765.

1793--JOSEPH INGRAM DIES WITH WILL, BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VA. HE IS MENTIONED IN HIS FATHER'S WILL OF 1763 AS A MINOR SO HIS BIRTH DATE HAS TO BE SOMETIME BETWEEN 1742-1761.

AS I SEE IT, THIS JOHN AND DESCENDANTS SEEM TO BE MIXED UP WITH A JOHN INGRAM WHO WAS LIVING IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA SOMETIME AROUND 1651. HE HAD A SON THOMAS WHO IN TURN HAD 3 SONS, JOHN, CHARLES, AND ABRAHAM.

CHARLES HAD SONS GEORGE, BARTHOLOMEW, CHARLES, JOHN, JOSEPH AND BENJAMIN ACCORDING TO HIS WILL OF 1760. THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM--THE SIMILAR NAMES.

I BELIEVE THE PROOF OF JOHN OF BRUNSWICK BEING JOHN OF MIDDLESEX COUNTY LIES IN THE LAND DEALS OF 1734 (WHICH MENTIONS HIS WIFE HANNAH) AND THE ONE OF 1750 WHICH MENTIONS HIS SON SAMUEL. WE KNOW THAT THIS IS THE SAME JOHN BECAUSE HIS WIFE'S NAME IS HANNA H IS THE LAND DEAL AND IN HIS WILL.

IT SEEMS THAT THE INGRAM LINE FROM MIDDLESEX COUNTY SEEMS TO HAVE SETTLED MOSTLY IN BRUNSWICK, LUNENBURG, AND MECKLENBURG COUNTIES IN VIRGINIA AND SOUTH INTO NORTH CARLINA'S ADJOINING COUNTIES OF BUTE AND GRANVILLE.

I BELIEVE THE NRTHUMBERLAND LINE SETTLED PRIMARILY IN THE VIRGINIA COUNTIES OF FRANKLIN, HENRY, AND PATRICK WHICH LIE DUE WEST OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VA. AND IN THE NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES OF RICHMOND AND CUMBERLAND.

AS WITH ALL FAMILIES, OF COURSE, EVENTUALLY THE LINES BECOME ALMOST BLURRED AS THE YEARS GO BY--BUT THE RECORDS GET BETTER.

I AM NOT A DESCENDANT OF THE INGRAMS BUT HAVE DONE THE RESEARCH IN RELATION TO CHARITY BEAUMONT WHO MARRIED A RICHARD WAITE IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY. SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A "THORN" IN OUR SIDE AND I WAS HOPING TO ONE DAY FIGURE OUT IF THE RICHARD WAITE THAT SH E MARRIED WAS "OUR" LINE OF WAITES.

IT HAS BEEN DEBATED FOR A FEW YEARS WHETHER THIS JOHN INGRAM OF BRUNSWICK WAS THE JOHN INGRAM OF MIDDLESEX AND I NEVER REALLY HAD THE TIME TO RESEARCH IT UNTIL RECENTLY.
WE ARE NOT LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE A DOCUMENT THAT STATES THIS WITH CERTAINTY SO WE ARE FORCED TO LOOK AT LOTS OF DIFFERENT SOURCES AND MAKE DEDUCTIONS 200 YEARS LATER BASED ON THE INFORMATION THAT WE CAN FIND.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

My name is John Frost Murlin. I have contacted you because of your link and familiarity with the Ingram family. For the past 20 years I have been perplexed as to the father of Joseph Ingram, Sr. Currently there are 2 major theories as to the lineage of Joseph Ingram, Sr. who died prior to 23 December 1793 in Brunswick County, Virginia. The first theory shows that Joseph Ingram, Sr. d 1793 is the son of Charles Ingram d 1760 and the second shows that Joesph Ingram, Jr. is the grandson of Charles Ingr am. Both theories point to the fact that both Charles d1 760 and John d 1763 had a son named Joseph.

Please let me know if this issue has already been fully resolved.

In a nutshell the 2 theories are as follows:

Idea 1 – Gerri Ingram’s website (www.oocities.org/gdingram2001/ingram/ingram.html many people seem to follow this) (this apparently came from Iona Ingram Sowa. My Ingram Family 1651-1925)

The evidence of the linke between Joseph Ingram, Sr died 1793 and Charles Ingram died 1760 is the will of Charles Ingram:

"Item I give unto my son Joseph Ingram what negroes he is possessed ofwith one featherbed and furniture, four head of cattle and four head ofhoggs which he is also in possession and to him and his heirs forever."

1. Joseph Ingram, Sr. (1725/1735- 1793)

2. Charles, b. Abt. 1680, Wicomico Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia; d. 11 Feb 1760, Northumberland County, Virginia.

3. THOMAS2 INGRAM (JOHN1) (Source: Lee Virgil Ingram Line) was born Abt. 1648 in Wiccomocco Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia, and died 21 May 1707 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He married KATHERINE WINTER (Source: Iona Ingram Sowa book My Ing ram Family, William and Mary Quarterly Vol IV and Virginia Genealogies V25, V. 25, 1916-1917, The Waddy Family of Northumberland County, Virginia, by Mrs. O.A. Keach.) 1670 in Northumberland County, Virginia, daughter of THOMAS V WINTER. She was born in N orthumberland County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1682.

4. JOHN1 INGRAM (Source: Lee Virgil Ingram Line) was born Abt. 1620 in England (Source: Iona Ingram Sowa. My Ingram Family 1651-1925, Page 6, The Waddy Family of Northumberland County, Virginia by Mrs. O.A. Keach, of Witchita, Kansas.), and died 1654 in N orthumberland County, Virginia. He married JANE (Source: Iona Ingram Sowa book My Ingram Family, William and Mary Quarterly Vol IV and Virginia Genealogies V25.) Abt. 1645. She was born 1624, and died Bet. 1666 - 1670 in Northumberland County, Virginia.

Idea 2 -

(Barbara Ingram’s view - or was several years ago) *** note there is only one difference here from Gerri’s – Barbara Ingram adds one generation, John, and puts Charles as being the grandfather of Joseph Ingram, Sr.

1. Joseph Ingram, Sr. (1725/1735- 1793)

2. John (abt 1700 - 01 Nov 1763) is the father of Joseph Ingram, Sr.

John Ingram was born about 1700 and married Hannah Presley, the daughter of Peter Presley and Winifred Griffin.

Supporting statement: The will of John Ingram 1762 Brunswick Co VA. This may be the father of Joseph Ingram Sr. Lists: wife Hannah, Sons- James, George, Joshua, Richard, Benjamin, and JOSEPH. Daughters - Elizabeth Vaughan and Tabitha Gee.

3. Charles and his wife was Elizabeth Demron.

4. Thomas Ingram and Katherine Winters.

5. John and Jane.

Item I, give and Bequeath unto my Son Joseph INGRAM after the Discease of my dear Wife Hannah INGRAM the manner Plantation whereon I, now live with fifty Acres of Land, on the north side of Meherrin River, being Par tof the said Land I, bought of Daniel T AYLOR, when he shall Come to the age of Twenty one Years To him and his Heirs forever.

This statement indicates to me that if the Joseph Ingram mentioned here is less than 21 years old in 1763, he is much younger than Charles's son.
