One page reports the the earliest ancestor of this line as a "Michael Bentz," born probably Germany ca. 1710 and who had one known son Michael Pence (1738-1799). This is the line known as the "Shenandoah County (Virginia) Pence Families." Another page has further discussion of Michael Bentz, possible parents and other children from church records. That page also brings other Shenandoah Pence's into the mix.
Michael Pence (1738-1799) is reported by some (a history and Rootsweb WorldConnect family trees) as born at sea, but that apparently was the result of confusion with another Michael. There reportedly is a record at Trinity Lutheran Church at New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania that shows he was born/baptized there on 12 March 1738. (Another place on that website lists other christening records that could be his siblings.) He died 25 December 1799 in Adams County, Ohio (or near Maysville, Kentucky) drowning while attempting to cross the Ohio River when his horses bolted from the ferry. The inventory of his estate was returned 17 January 1800 in Adams County, Ohio. (The website does not show a transcription of the will, its date, list of beneficiaries, date it was filed with the court, etc.) Michael Pence married Sybilla (Isabella, Ibby, Civie) Frye on 29 December 1767 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, she the daughter of Henry Frye of Maidencreek Township, Berks County. She remarried second to John Davidson 6 October 1803 in Adams County and later sought and obtained separate maintenance.
Reportedly (I have not seen the record), the marriage record of "Michael Bens" names his father as Michael of Earl Town, Lancaster County. Also reportedly, a "Michael Bentz" age 27 arrived (where?) on the ship Loyal Judith in 1732 and a Michael Bentz of Earl Town married an Anna Elizabeth Huber (or Hoover) 10 May 1737. One webpage seems to indicate that the connection is uncertain; another appears confident these are Michael's parents and goes further in listing sublings from baptism records of the Trinity Lutheran Church, New Holland, Lancaster Co., PA.
From Lancaster County, Pennsylvania the family went to Shenandoah County, Virginia. Based on reported births and marriages of children this move would have been between 1770 and 1785. There is an apparent gap between reported births of children between 1770 and 1780 which is unexplained. Births of some children reportedly listed in the records of Old Pine Church in Shenandoah County, Virginia. I have not seen that data. Another page elsewhere on the website cites the source: 200 Years in the Shenandoah Valley, by "Kelly" (no further cite info.) and indicates the surname was mis-spelled (mis-read or mis-transcribed?) as "Lentz."
From Virginia, the family moved to Sprigg Twp., Adams County, Ohio which is on Ohio River on Kentucky border. Adams and Brown County, Ohio adjoin E-W and their southern borders are the Ohio River. Again, based on reported dates, the move to Ohio was apparently between 1795 and 1799, probably around 1796.
Burials of some Pence's in Adams County, Ohio are reported in a Pence (Family) Cemetery (Sprigg Twp.), Bentonville Church Cemetery (Sprigg Twp.) and Shelton Cemetery (Sprigg Twp.). Looks like Bentonville Church is "Manchester Islands" USGS Topo Map, 38.742dN, 83.619dW. (Poss. Bentonville/West Union, OH: 12577 State Rt 125, West Union OH 45693; Methodist) A transcription of cemeteries in Adams County exists: Adams County, Ohio Cemeteries. Description from FHL catalog: "includes cemetery inscriptions from Green, Monroe, and Sprigg townships, with brief historical notes." Available via FHL fiche 6088941 which I have not (yet) seen.
Some other Pence in Shelby Co. KY, not known if any connection; Adams/Brown Counties are way far east of Shelby/Henry Counties. There were also some Patton's from the County Donegal Ireland line in Adams County, Ohio. There is an Ellsberry town in Brown County, near the Ohio River.
At this point, I am jumping a couple generations ahead. The following information I have personally researched and cited.
Charles Lyston Pence was son of Peter Pence (1815/1816-1880/1900) and Lydia Ann Howell (1823-aft1900). This is confirmed by the Illinois death certificate of Charles Lyston Pence and is supported by the various censuses. The informant on the death certificate was a Lydia Ann Hawkins of Keokuk, Iowa whom I believe to be the Lydia Pence who was his daughter (1880 & 1900 censuses). She should have been a knowledgeable informant but she did not know the surname of her grandmother. Note that Lydia Ann Pence has the same given name as Peter Pence's wife, Lydia Ann (Howell) Pence, apparently having been named after her grandmother. (Lydia Pence became wife of John J. Hawkins and they lived for a while in Pike County (1910 census) and between 1910 and 1920 moved to Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa (1920 and 1930). John J. Hawkins apparently died between 1920 and 1930.)
The apparent Pence ancestry of Charles, subject to correction, is: Charles (1852-1942) < Peter (abt1815/1816-aft1880) < George (1793-1873) < Peter (1770-1832) < Michael (1738-1799).
There was another Charles Pence who was born April, 1852 in Adams County, Ohio who has been confused with Charles Lyston Pence. This was Charles F. "Charley" Pence who was born 4 April 1852; died 2 April 1926 at Byrd Twp., Brown Co., Ohio; buried 4 April 1926 at Decatur Cemetery, Brown Co., Ohio; son of John Pence and Matilda Elizabeth or Jane Henderson; married Sarah ________. This is likewise confirmed by an Ohio death certificate and is also consistent with the censuses.

I had found various errors in the information in just the few sections of his site pertaining to the Michael Pence (1738-1799) family line of interest which I read mid-2007. It also appears from the narratives that some information and relationships sound uncertain, so use this website with a LOT of caution. I reported certain specific errors that I found to him and after several tortured emails back and forth they were sort of corrected in November 2007. The errors I have found as of October 2007 are listed at the end. I will retain this list for reference since some users may have copied the incorrect information previously. See website at: Pence main page . Following discusses early Shenandoah Pence family: "Michael, Conrad, George Philip and Nicholas Pence" -
