Farr Surname Families

Overview

The initial purpose of this page was to record research performed in connection with the family and descendants of Daniel Farr, Sr. (abt1717-1774) of Boylston/Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He was son of Samuel B. Farr (abt1684-1754) and Hannah Whitney and grandson of Stephen Farr (1649-1696) and Mary Taylor (1649-1699). But I have now expanded it somewhat to include all Farr surname lines.

Thomas Farr, Immigrant, (1617/1619-1672)

Of Haynes, Bedfordshire, England and Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts.

Thomas Farr (1), was of Lynn and Boston, and thought to be the brother of George Farr of Lynn, the shipwright. He m. Elizabeth -- (Thomas was, according to a power of attorney executed in Boston on 2 Feb., 1645, known as the son of Thomas Farrar (or Farr) , from near Lancashire and Burnley, England, and brother of Henry Farr, a mariner) He died at Lynn, 23 Feb., 1693/4. Elizabeth died 8 Jan., 1680/1

Descendants of Stephen Farr (1649-1696) and Mary Taylor (1649-1699)

Stephen Farr (2) [Thomas(1)], was probably born 14 September 1649 in Haynes, Bedfordshire, England [citation TBF]. He came to America with his father, and settled at Concord, Mass. He married 25 May 1674 in Stowe, Mass. to Mary Taylor (b. 12 Sept, 1649, daugher of William & Mary (Merriam) Taylor). [William Taylor was of Concord, Mass. ca. 1640, where he was owner of a large farm on the East Bedford Road. He died at Concord, 6 Dec., 1696. He m. Mary, daughter of Joseph & Sarah (Stone) Merriam of Concord. Mary died at Concord, 10 Dec., 1699). Joseph Merriam was born at Kent County, England, ca. 1600, son of William Merriam. He settled at Concord, Mass, coming in June, 1638. He was a clothier, and m. in Kent Co. England Sarah, dau. of John & Frances (Jeffries) Goldstone) and d. at Concord, Mass. in 1640.]

Stephen Farr was a soldier of King Philip's War, serving under Capt. Nathaniel Davenport in the Narragansett Campaign of 1675. This group of foot soldiers attacked the Narragansett Indian fort at Kingston, Rhode Island and attempted to wipe out the Narragansett Indian tribe in a battle known as "The Great Swamp Fight." The Narragansett Indians were believed to be allies with the Wampanoag Indians under King Philip's leadership who had attacked many English settlements and killed a great many English settlers and their families.
