Genealogy and History

For now, just isolated notes.

The histories and families of the adjacent counties of Henry and Shelby in Kentucky are so closely interwoven, I am combining them in one page. That combined history is particularly important regarding the Low Dutch Company. However, Henry and Shelby are, of course, now governmentally separate. Historical/genealogical organizations, publications and other research resources are also separate for each county. Also closely allied historically are the counties of Oldham, Trimble and Jefferson (Louisville).

Marriages

Looks like gap in online index coverage from 1900 to 1972.

Early original marriage records have been discarded. They were deteriorating and were transcribed.

Marriages to 1850 have been published in book form many years ago.

Henry Co. marriages are available online at familysearch.org in "old" IGI - I do not know what the coverage of years is.

Henry Co. marriages are available online at "new" "pilot" familysearch.org Kentucky Marriages, 1785-1979 The "coverage table" does not show coverage years by county, only a total record count by county for 1785-1979. That count for Henry County is 4,774 (March 2011). Offhand, it looks like Henry Co. doesn't go past about 1910; the cutoff may be mid-1908, coinciding with microfilm (see below).

Censuses

The 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses for Henry County were transcribed and published in booklet form many years ago (i.e. pre-internet). Now, indexes and page images of those and other censuses are available online at services such as FamilySearch, Heritage Quest (head of household only) and Ancestry.com.

Cemeteries - Henry County

Burials in Henry County cemeteries have been transcribed and published in Cemeteries of Henry County, Kentucky; C. Price Meek; (date). Burials are listed alpha by surname, given name accompanied by birth/death dates, cemetery code and a sequential number within the cemetery. Includes a listing of cemetery names, coordinates and location descriptions. Pleasureville aka "Low Dutch" Cemetery
Location: In "south" Pleasureville, turn onto Cemetery Rd which is directly across from the Pleasureville Post Office. It's a residential street. When you turn the first curve, you'll be facing the cemetery.

Cemeteries - Shelby County

There does not appear to be any published complete transcription. A few transcriptions are listed on the Shelby County USGenWeb site. There are a LOT of individual cemetery names listed, probably small family cemeteries.

Grove Hill is a major cemetery in Shelby County (458 Mount Eden Rd. (53), Shelbyville, 40065-8870, (502)633-2750)). Searchable burial database now (March 2011) online Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville : Online burial database As of March 2013, the database has about 15,000 burials. The Findagrave.com website shows about 12,700 of those burials as of March 2013 as well as other assorted burials in Henry and Shelby Counties.

Censuses - Shelby County

The 1850 census of Shelby County has been transcribed by volunteers. This is additional to the indexed versions at Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. The following link will take you to a directory listing of the transcription. It includes the every name index ("index.txt") and the transcription of the pages. The naming of the files containing the census page transcriptions appears odd, giving the appearance of gaps. However, the file name is just the number of the first page transcribed in the file. All census pages are included within those files and they are cross-referenced in the index.txt file. The page files contain all details shown on the original 1850 census pages.
