Roberts County, South Dakota Genealogy and History

General

David Stiles, his children and his descendants migrated to Roberts County, South Dakota about 1880. David's children were born 1837-1851/3 at Woodhull, Steuben Co., New York. The family migrated and lived at Steuben Co., Indiana (1856-1858); Adams Co., Wisconsin (1858-1862); Sauk Centre, Stearns Co., Minnesota (1862-1880) and (1880-1895). Descendants of David remained in Minnesota after 1880. Also migrating to Roberts County, apparently in some conjunction with David Stiles, were descendants of Levi Shaw (1783-1839) and Phila Merritt Shaw (1793-1859). David married their daughter Clarinda Shaw (1817-1878) but there were other Shaw migrations and connections as well, too intricate to explain here. It appears the families were and remained close and connected.

I am not clear precisely where they lived. It was apparently in the Wilmot-Corona area. Family (descendants of the Shaw side) were buried at the Eastman Cemetery.

Cemeteries

Preface: I am not local to the area and have never been there on the ground to see first hand, so what I come up with is from looking at the Google maps and relying on the GPS data at Findagrave.com

This searchable database includes records that were cataloged as part of the WPA Cemetery Project (pre-1940s). The Works Progress Administration, a New Deal-era relief agency, conducted a survey of the cemeteries in South Dakota in the 1940s.
