Preface.

Having completed in 1889 a collection of Marriage Records of Snyder County and
published them in a book of 266 pages, I conceived the idea of publishing the
inscriptions of the Tombstone of Snyder County. This volume is the result of
those plans.

The inscriptions here given have been published from time to time in the
Middleburg Post for the past five years. The first section was published January
26, 1899, another August 3, 1899 and others more or less regular ever since.

According to the table of Contents on teh prededing page there are a total of
8642 inscriptions recorded in the book. This "inscription" book is a companion
volume to the "Marriage" book.

Unfortunately for posterity, quite a great many graves are unmarked. For such
graves no record could be made. In a few instances, however, the reporters
gathered data of unmarked graves from friends of the deceased. We simply did the
best we were able to do.

This book, like its predecessor from my pen, has been the product of utilizing
moments hastily snatched from a busy editorial chair and the active duties of
managing a publishing and printing business.

We submit this volume to the public with a sigh of relief after five years since
its inception. Should any errors occur, we ask the kindly forbearance of the
reader, as under the adverse circumstances with which this book has been
produced, we could scarcely expect to avoid all of them.

[signed] Geo. W. Wagenseller
