Since the book was written in 1888, subsequent research may have uncovered additions and corrections. See Van Voorhees Family Association, below. The following information comes from just this book.
The author uses an unconventional style of organization and numbering of individuals, so at first reading, this book can be difficult and confusing to trace people through - both forwards and backwards. After some study, though, it does fall into place, particularly in the context of the amount of information available about various individuals.
To further confuse matters, in the early history, naming of the children followed a patronymic naming system; i.e. the child's "surname" is the given name of the father. In the Dutch, an "e", "s" or "se" was added as a suffix, presumably indicating "son of". For example, Steven Coerte was son of Coert Alberts. The person was further identified as to the place he or she lived; i.e. Van Voorhees, meaning "of" (the farm of) Voorhees (at the town of Hees) (Holland), The patronymic was eventually discontinued and the surname became Van Voorhees, later subjected to spelling variants.
The book is organized in two parts. The first part, "Part First", pages 1 to 36, is a description of the origins of the family in Holland and family group listings of the children and grand-children of the earliest known ancestor, Coert Alberts of Voorhees. Only lines of descendants of one child, Steven Coerte Van Voorhees, are reported in the book. The second part, "Part Second", starting at page 37, is organized in the sequence of the grand-children of Coert Alberts of Voorhees, BUT each serially-numbered section (in Roman Numerals) refers to one of his great-grand-children. Consequently, to understand the organization of the second part, one must focus on the great-grand children.
The convention used to number individuals follows an outline format which I think is not standard (i.e. what I learned in English class) and repeats after the fourth level as follows:
Albert ... of Voorhees 1. Coert Alberts of Voorhees a., b., ... A., B., ... I., II., ... 1., 2., ... [repeats] a., b., ... A., B., ... I., II., ...Consequently, different individuals generations removed may have the same outline ID. Particularly confusing is reuse of the Roman Numerals.
The great-grand-children of Coert Alberts are assigned Roman Numeral identification ranges under their fathers as follows:
Albert ____ of Voorhees 1. Coert Alberts of Voorhees b. Hilbert Coerte of Voorhees c. Jan Coerte of Voorhees d. Albert Coerte of Voorhees e. Wesvel Coerte of Voorhees f. A daughter, name unknown g. A daughter, name unknown a. Steven Coerte Van Voorhees A. Hendrickjen Stevense Van Voorhees (none) B. Merghin Stevense Van Voorhees I - VII C. Coert Stevense Van Voorhees VIII - XVI D. Lucas Stevense Van Voorhees XVII - XXXII E. Jan Stevense Van Voorhees XXXIII - XLIII F. Albert Stevense Van Voorhees XLIV - LVIII G. Altje Stevense Van Voorhees LIX - LXV H. Jannetje Stevense Van Voorhees LXVI - LXXV I. Hendrickje Stevense Van Voorhees LXXVI - LXXXV J. Abraham Stevense Van Voorhees LXXXVI (only)
Steven Coerte [Van Voorhees] settled at New Amersfoort which was renamed Flatlands after the British occupation. New Amersfoort was previously the site of an ancient Indian village called Kaskachague and was at the crossing of two Indian trails. Many of the Van Voorhees relocated to New Brunswick, New Jersey where they were members of the Dutch Reformed Church around 1717.
